How Wigan & Leigh College teach Editorial Design


Editorial Design is a big industry and the largest one employing ‘Graphic’ designers. To be a part of this industry you have to be well aware of the different forms of ‘Graphic Designing’ methods, publishing techniques and print layouts.

To become a good ‘Editorial Designer’ one has to adhere to the strict rules and guiding layouts and one has to be of a very creative disposition to make the material look attractive, appealing and neat at the same time.  The success of the publication material depends on clear communication and consistent storytelling, both of which demand rigorous applications of grid layouts and the establishment of visual hierarchies in order to keep readers entertained while they consume the content.

One has to be well-aware of the design trends, typography, the preliminary graphic-designing skill-set and have an aesthetic bend to furnish a good editorial design. Many institutes and colleges in India furnish its students with Graphic Designing Course. WLCI School of Design provides a comprehensive course in Advertising and Graphic Design with special module on ‘Editorial Design’. The eligibility criterion is completion of 10 +2 years of education or graduates. There are special courses for working professionals also.

Student Review of WLCI on Portfolio Night



wlci reviewNikita Sharma, who is a ‘Design Student’ at WLCI’s Visual Communication course, recently had quite an exuberating experience at the ‘Portfolio Night’ held at Mumbai this year which was hosted by Lowe-Lintas and their partners.

Nikita Sharma is undergoing the one-of-a-kind paid “Traineeship” programme at WLCI Design School. She got the golden opportunity to attend this event which otherwise only allows professional and pro’s from the advertising and design field. Portfolio Night is the largest and most anticipated global portfolio review and recruitment event which is hosted every year and advertising professionals are ready to give an arm and leg to attend this much sought after event.

In Nikita’s case being a WLCI student and already undergoing a ‘Traineeship’ played in her favor and gave her the required passport to be a part of this coveted occasion. She was more than overjoyed to attend and took her work, her resume and the campaigns she had worked in for showcasing the same to mentors.

She met Ashwin Varkey-Executive Creative Director of Lintas, Ashish Chakravorty –ECD of Contract Advertising and Rajiv Rao-National Creative Director of O and M, to name a few. Her work was reviewed by these stalwarts and was highly appreciated. Apart from the scope of displaying and getting scrutinized by the Industry-leaders you also get to interact with the Advertising and Design Industry experts and get guidance from them. Nikita attended this event in Mumbai and in her own words -
          “It was an unbelievable experience that she will cherish forever…”

Nikita has also undergone a paid “Traineeship” at JWT and recently completed her Advanced Certification course in Visual Communications from WLCI Delhi.
